How Marie Forleo's B-School Changed Everything
I always knew that I wanted to work for myself but I had no idea what I wanted to do (or could actually do) in order to earn money. Sign up for Marie's free business training here
Here's my business timeline…
As a teen, I made jewellery that I sold in a few shops and at markets - I could do it, but I didn't love it.
Then in my early 20's I made a zine which I loved, but I wasn't very good at (and it didn't earn a lot of money.)
Also in my early 20's I became a booking agent for live music venue, which I didn't really enjoy as much as I thought I would. So I just drank a lot of beer with musicians until I figured out that it wasn't my calling in life.
In 2006 I became a qualified spiritual healer and meditation teacher, which I loved AND was good at but I didn't know how to make money from it, (mostly because I was trying to be something that I wasn't) so I stopped.
In 2009 I had a big business idea that I invested a lot of time into getting started, only to find out that, I couldn't afford to get it off the ground (keeping the cards close to my chest on this one as it might still happen one day!)
In 2010 I started selling essential oil blends and products, which I enjoyed, but I didn't LOVE, and I wasn't willing to put in the effort required to take it to the next level.
In 2011 I started getting more serious about my counselling business (which I had been doing on the side ever since doing my healer's training in 2006) and I managed to find a good following of local people for an "in person" business, but I didn't enjoy having my clinic/healing space in my house, and I couldn't afford to rent a consulting room.
In 2012 I had a baby, just as business was at its peak and I was finally earning good money. Desperate to keep that momentum going (and serve my clients) I went back to work when my daughter was only 3 weeks old. Something I will always regret! I didn't know how to make money if I wasn't seeing clients before I did B-School.
In 2013 I spent most of my time in mama-mode but I ran a few workshops and dreamt up yet another new business idea and took steps towards it only to find out that, again I needed more money than expected to get it off the ground. So I put that on hiatus and decided to rebrand my counselling business, with an online focus.
Between mid-2013 and early 2014 (when I did B-School) I learned as much as I possibly could. I read blogs, listened to podcasts, worked with coaches and enrolled in training programs. I wanted to do it right this time!
I had finally realised that it was essential for me to invest money in to myself and my business in order to get ahead.
And once I completed B-School, I had all of the wisdom and skills that I needed to craft a business that I LOVE, that MAKES MONEY and HELPS PEOPLE.
+ why I need to stop targeting the wrong people and where to find the right people.
+ how to communicate through stories, helpful content and soulful selling.
+ how to find and set up all of the technical systems that I need for my business.
Most importantly, I learned who I am, who I want to be, and how to effectively show that to the world without feeling like a fraud. Now I'm armed with the knowledge I need to find my ideal clients, to continually expand my audience and to make a real difference to people's lives.
